Never Forget The Business Social Media Marketing Percentage Rule.

The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there’s a 90% probability you’ll get it wrong.

I recently met with a prospective new business client who was referred to me via one of my Linkedin Expert contacts.

This client was a business owner who had doubled his business in 2012 as most of the business world ‘Circled their Wagons’ while languishing under a global economic downturn.

The client wanted to Linkedin Monkeyintroduce a 5 year exit strategy based on the premise of doubling his business year on year for the next 5 years. He was confident of achieving this and on the face of it he appeared to be well on track.

He understood the possibility of achieving long term sustainable business growth through online business social media and networking organisations, but as a ‘Business Social Media Learner Driver’ he did not personally have any idea of how to manage this type of strategy.

Before I visited with him he had had discussions with conventional marketing specialists and other marketing specialists whose focus was on Facebook and Twitter. He had also held deep and meaningful consultations with one or some independent Linkedin Experts.

The client felt his greatest opportunities for growth would come from www.linkedin.com However he was considering engaging all of these individual specialists and adopting a ‘shotgun’ approach to business networking and social media.

The problem was, from an exponential business growth perspective this idea was pre-programmed for failure. Each of the marketing specialists were freelance independents who typically worked alone with focus on just their specialised sector.

Furthermore there was a ‘Power Play’ already in motion with some of these consultants stating their platform was far superior to some of the others. Others felt they deserved higher fees than some of the others.

Looking in from the outside it was clear that chaos already reined and egos were trying to climb over each other.

It was evident to me the client was super confused and was about to lose his ass by trying to please everyone. I felt he should take a step backwards in order to take two steps forward.

In my opinion he needed to take a command decision to adopt a very clear and focused marketing strategy to master Linkedin first before attempting to try the other social media platforms.

He struggled somewhat with the fact that I thought he might not be able to please and control all of these other marketing specialists, so I outlined the following fable to him.

“An old man, a boy and a donkey were going to town and it was decided that the boy should ride. As they went along they passed some people who thought that it was a shame for the boy to ride and the old man to walk.

The old man and boy decided that maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions. Later, they passed more people who thought that it was a real shame for that man to make such a small boy walk. The two decided that maybe they both should walk.

Soon they passed some more people who thought that it was stupid to walk when they had a donkey to ride. The man and the boy decided maybe the critics were right, so they decided that they both should ride. They soon passed other people who thought that it was a shame to put such a load on a poor little animal.

The old man and the boy decided that maybe the critics were right so they decided to carry the donkey. As they crossed a bridge they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.”

The moral of the story……….

IF YOU TRY TO PLEASE EVERYONE, YOU’LL EVENTUALLY LOSE YOUR ASS!

Guess what? The client understood where I was coming from and I’m happy to say we at; www.elinked.eu are going to provide his business social media marketing for him. As part of my project management I will be contracting in some of the other social media specialists to work with our team under a clearly defined business growth marketing plan with me.
