Go with the glow

Over the years I’ve been responsible for hiring over 50,000 people, and it’s never ceased to amaze me how many people work so hard to get a job that they don’t actually want.

In my experience:

  1. Whatever career path you’re following, if it’s boring then it’s the wrong one.
  2. It’s not necessary to leave your heart at home when you go to work.
  3. You don’t have to do work that you don’t want to do for the rest of your life. The choice is yours. It always has been.
  4. Your goal is not to become a successful entrepreneur, professional or artist. The goal is to express who you are and live your DNA. When you do that, success will follow.
  5. When your heart is in your work, you don’t have to worry about work life balance because there’s no difference between the two.
  6. By doing what you love and doing it often, you’ll nourish your soul and be happy.
  7. When you do something that inspires you and create work that matters, you’ll infect others with the possibility virus.
  8. Get lost in your work and you will find yourself.

Humour

The forthcoming European Parliament elections reminded me of the following:

Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other.

~Oscar Amringer, “the Mark Twain of American Socialism.”

I offered my opponents a deal: “if they stop telling lies about me, I will stop telling the truth about them”.

~Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952..

A politician is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country.

~Texas Guinan. 19th century American businessman

I have come to the conclusion that politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians.

~Charles de Gaulle, French general & politician

Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks.

~Doug Larson (English middle-distance runner who won gold medals at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, 1902-1981)

Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river.

~Nikita Khrushchev, Russian Soviet politician

When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become PM; I’m beginning to believe it.

~Quoted in ‘Clarence Darrow for the Defense’ by Irving Stone.

Politicians are people who, when they see light at the end of the tunnel, go out and buy some more tunnel.

~John Quinton, American actor/writer
