Business Network Leadership by Dr. Mark D. Yates

Most linkedin experts agree that if you are planning on building a substantial business networking group, then you need to adopt the mind-set of a military General. But unlike conventional military Generals who inherit well formed and highly trained foot soldiers, you are going to have to start from scratch and build your own army of business recruits.

On Linkedin your network is to some extent your linkedin profile team, especially if you are a dynamic Power Networker. You may run several networks simultaneously so you need to be able to harness the power of teams. Occasionally you may need to unite your teams as one for a specific business growth project.

A team is only as effective as the sum of all its parts. A successful leader understands how to select the team players, unite them as one and then how to harness the power of the team. My own leadership style is not dictatorial, but rather based on careful selection of the most qualified people for the job and then empowering them to do what they do best. I remain however very cynical of imposter leaders and have no time for hypercritical and destructive critiques.

In my days of training special forces for extremely high risk security operations, I was often tasked with training personnel from multiple units and/or agencies. Most of who had never met each other before. Despite the large amounts of testosterone, oestrogen and egos required to even be at this level, I was always able to pull them together as a cohesive team and able to harness them to any tasks I placed before them within 30 hours.

When growing a business network/s in a long term sustainable fashion, I subscribe to the leadership concept of lead, follow or get out of the way. I believe this as I’ve found this to be the only type of only leadership style proven to work in growing proactive global business networks.


Many Power Networkers make a crucial mistake of trying to build

multiple BUSINESS or social media networks simultaneously.


In fact you often see some of the self appointed LinkedIn Growth Gurus promoting this through their linkedin blogs, linkedin tips and linkedin articles as a ‘must do option.’ They suggest you work on Facebook, Xing, Ushi, Google+, Ecademy & Twitter all at the same time as you use linkedin.

Trust me this is not the best way to use Linkedin as this flawed business networking strategy is pre-programmed for absolute failure.

Every business networking group and organization is different and if you want to succeed with each of them, then you need to invest adequate time, effort and resources into mastering each networking group before you dive in with a ‘Shotgun Approach.’

In professional Power Networking terms it’s much better if you refuse to be a ‘Jack Of All Trades’ and direct your entire focus into becoming a Master Of One Business Network.’
