With approximately 330 million members, with a majority of them classified as business decision makers, and over 40% of them using LinkedIn consultancy and/or LinkedIn training every day; it becomes worthwhile exploring the reasons why so many people fail to leverage LinkedIn for profitable business growth.
It’s wrong to think that most people using the LinkedIn platform do so simply to hire a LinkedIn expert or to find a dynamic LinkedIn speaker.
So the answer to why so many business owners fail to leverage LinkedIn could lie within the business owners and executives themselves, and how they handle their business social media. Most executives and business owners that I have worked with and consulted with are been solidary creatures and creatures of habit. They push themselves to maintain their competitive business edge and to achieve super business success. By definition, most executives and business owners then get to occupy the loneliest positions in the business world.
This is why many despise face to face business networking and believe that online business social media will be no different to the horror of conventional business networking. Having to invest up two to three hours of several time constrained business days to attend networking events in the remote hope of gaining some new productive business connections is a bitter pill to swallow.
Shaking hand after hand, palming masses of business cards and listening to torturous small talk, many business owners then become the stalked prey to the tunnel vision business networkers who are managing their business growth plan solely by networking and procuring business connections.
From researching our own Linkedin consultancy and LinkedIn training clients we have identified that within the masses of traditional business executive networkers, there is one who stands out from the crowd. He is still trying to gain valuable business connections, and he tells all who will listen that he has a new way of increasing a company’s business growth.
Ged the Geek, is his name and he is known as the online business social media networking geek.
Gerard, AKA Ged goes to great lengths explaining how he and his team of geeks can help anyone grow their business by implementing black magic and voodoo related black & white hat online marketing strategies. The executive is then bombarded with ‘geek speak’ for half an hour as Gerald outlines his SEO, PPC, HTM5 & Electronic spider indexing online business growth secrets.
However, most business executives and owners are completely baffled by the ‘geek speak’ and the idea of online business social media as a form of networking and retaining business connections. Swapping small talk for several hours in a room full of strangers serves no productive purpose for many executives; in fact their main focus is on escaping and getting back to the business coal face.
Why is this so typically common? Because by definition most proactive executives are actually introverts, and two of the greatest weapons in their business arsenal are their time and their privacy. Think about every CEO you’ve ever met. Can you ever recall them describing themselves as ‘a people person’?
In fact at the C- level executive level, they don’t want to talk about business social media networking, because most of them simply don’t understand it. Therefore for them the words ‘Social & Networking’ are a contradiction in terms.
Instead of poorly structured networking chit chat, most CEO’s that I know would prefer the company of a small peer group for a couple of hours of ‘Mission Specifics’ to discuss specific challenges – and their solutions. This could be a LinkedIn speaker or they might hire a LinkedIn expert.
This concept might explain why so much productive business is conducted on the golf course.
The hunting ground of the geeks, just like Ged, are typically the face to face networking events. This is where they swarm around the new attendees, like lions surrounding their prey, bearing gifts and promising unlimited business growth for your business from their LinkedIn consultancy or LinkedIn training services.
Mention you are looking to retain a LinkedIn speaker or that your business needs to hire a LinkedIn expert and Ged immediately adds both of those job titles to his Resume.
Their gift bearing journey began in the 90’s when they promised businesses unlimited new customers and business connections if you bought their website service. Then they offered Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), then electronic data base sales and marketing lists. Next came push, pull and shout marketing strategies. Hyperlinks to other web sites. Then they offered e-commerce sales sites, then blogs, blog optimised articles, webinars, podcasts, and online videos before coming full circle and offering SEO for business social media profiles.
Now these ‘geeks’ promise their ‘new paid service gifts’ will have more profitable business connections and customers filling your bank account and supporting your business growth plan. Insisting that you have to be connected via Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, and hundreds of other business social media networks, for it to make a difference.
For me personally, one thing is consistent. From a financial perspective I’ve invested heavily in Geeks Bearing Gifts. I’ve also invested a lot of time, effort, energy and passion on some pretty top flight Internet marketing Geek Gurus and only ever received a profitable return on investment from 2 of their SEO Initiatives.
Internet marketing Geeks who float from one client to another offering every new online marketing Initiative available, are in my opinion typically pre-programmed for failure. The phrase, ‘Jack of all Trades & Master of None’ springs to mind. If a business is to invest in online business social media for their networking and ultimately retaining business connections the platform needs to be perfect for their needs. Linkedin has supported business professionals since its creation, helping them develop their business networks and improve their business growth plan.
That’s not to say there aren’t any professional SEO specialists out there, because there are. It’s just a time consuming, and always a costly trial and error exercise trying to find the real professionals.
I firmly believe there is always a positive in every business negative. Therefore we’ve embraced Ged the Geek and provided him with continuous professional development and slotted him into our extremely professional team of LinkedIn consultancy and LinkedIn training specialists.
Ged the Geeks primary skill sets lie in implementing online technical strategies and tactics. We play to his strengths and we allow our business clients to capitalise from them. But he is, and will always remain a single cog in one of our multi cog business growth wheels.
