Average Joe or LinkedIn Pro?

“What’s the benefit of connecting with you?”  Geek


This is a question that has been posed to me while I have been expanding my professional network on LinkedIn, and at first this question really startled me. What did I have to offer?

The average income of business professionals using LinkedIn is 86.000 US$ per year. This means that the majority of people using LinkedIn are fairly senior members of businesses, perhaps the owner or managing director of a company.


I on the other hand… well; I guess at first glance you may consider me your average Jo. A pencil pusher, data collector, report giver and coffee maker. What do I and all other average Joe’s have to offer to the big bad world of professional business networking on LinkedIn?


As it turns out, a lot. Being a valuable connection on LinkedIn is easy if you know how. Here are 3 steps that have worked for me:

1.       Be an open networker

Grow your contact list fast by joining open networking groups like the Black Belt POWER Networkers or Top Linked. The more 1st level connections you have the larger your 2nd and 3rd level connections networks become. Every 1st level connection you make brings you closer to the person who is going to benefit you and your business or personal goals.


What is the benefit of connecting with an open networker? They are more likely to be 1st level connected to a LinkedIn member someone else wants to be introduced to.

2.       Be active, be engaging

You need to be brave on LinkedIn, putting yourself out there is a must. If you want to get closer to achieving your personal or business goals through networking it is essential to post updates, respond to questions and generally engage with your network on LinkedIn.


What is the benefit of connecting with someone who is active and engaging on LinkedIn? You are useful. You can offer feedback and be a sounding board for business ideas, a participant giving data to question polls and a way of channelling interest into another person’s business by liking their posts and updates.

3.       Be a LinkedIn Guru

Get the tips, tricks and know how. Turn your profile from a shabby resume into a shiny business profile that attracts the interest of other professionals. Okay, I am aware that doing this is a little harder than step 1 and 2. Do not worry fellow average Joe; I have a solution for you. Go out and invest in a LinkedIn training program that will give you a step by step guide to turning your LinkedIn profile into the envy of your connections. What is the benefit of connecting with a LinkedIn guru? Quite obvious but, everybody needs to be connected to a LinkedIn guru! If you’re a LinkedIn guru the tables have turned and you can be the one asking the question ‘what is the benefit of connecting with you?
