How LinkedIn recommendations should be earned and not bought

If you have been using LinkedIn for as long as I have then you are likely aware of a growing number of users who are spamming your inbox offering to give you a recommendation if you give one in return. In fact there are even websites dedicated to offering a glowing recommendation for a measly fee.

So do I feel that you should use these services to try and boost your profile’s standing? Of course not!
By swapping or trading LinkedIn recommendations you will immediately appear to be less sincere and trustworthy when a user views your profile. This in turn will lead to users developing negative impressions about you and your business.
If you wish to succeed in growing your business on LinkedIn you need to stand out. Posting around 10 legitimate recommendations from suitable sources such as from old managers or even from a client, can really help to convince others that your business can deliver on the promises that it offers.

Tough Talk

Recruiters and clients are not going to be fooled by a couple of recommendations from strangers that give false praise. To succeed you will need to get out there and find people you have worked with to provide trustworthy accounts of your expertise.

Tool Tip

Think outside the box about who you can contact to write a recommendation. Contacting the manager at your previous job may be the most obvious choice, but consider asking clients or people you have done voluntary work for as well.
