6 Ways LinkedIn Helps You Develop and Achieve Success


LinkedIn is one of the most fertile hunting grounds for business people, searching for success and making beneficial B2B connections. It is one of many social media platforms, allowing people from around the world to connect to each other. What makes LinkedIn different is that it targets business and business-minded people, which makes it stand out as a tool to gain leverage within the professional industries.

LinkedIn, as a business social media platform, allows like-minded professionals to connect and have the ability to show their skills and experience like an online resume or CV. Many people opt to utilise this platform in order to develop their career or to seek further employment, seeking a job that suits them and their specialities.

There are 6 ways LinkedIn has benefited me. Each one shows how I’ve been able to reign in LinkedIn as a social media platform to show my achievements, my progress in my career, and develop into an expert.


Getting Recognition for My Talents

Getting recognition isn’t something you should strive for, but you’d still welcome it. Recognition is good for you personally; it’s beneficial to your self-esteem, it helps you understand where you’re right, it gets you known to the wider, professional community. Working in the marketing and creative industry can be challenging, due to the extreme competition, so recognition can be hard to come by. Utilising LinkedIn will get you recognised and allow you to sit upon its social media platform, and subsequently be seen by other experts.


Being Endorsed for My Skills

Similar to being recognised, one of LinkedIn’s features allows you to be endorsed for your skills. Resumes and CVs promote you as an expert in your field, the only problem is that they don’t show which skills are better. You could have spent a lot of time trying to develop your leadership qualities and become highly skilled in leading others, but on paper, it looks like it’s on par with, for example, your customer service abilities. LinkedIn allows your connections to ‘endorse’ your skills, which subsequently accrues points. This way, anyone viewing your profile can see your skills on the page and that you’re a fantastic leader.


Connecting with Similar-Minded Professionals

If you want to progress through your career, it would be a good idea to meet others who are similar-minded in your field. Your peers and contemporaries are necessary to progress and develop your professional self. Like-minded people inspire each other and help each other develop to essentially improve the quality of the job in hand. You can connect to these people and find new opportunities. You can network online, gaining a vaster understanding of the industry in which you work through the variety of current successful people.


Staying Connected with Colleagues/Alumni

Social media is all about staying in touch. Facebook allows you to keep in touch with friends and family, Twitter lets you ‘follow’ people you admire, Instagram lets you connect with the use of photos. LinkedIn, however, allows you to stay connected to past work colleagues and even college and university alumni. It’s important not to lose the people you connect with throughout your life, so this is a good benefit to keep these important connections, watching your old university friend in a new job, or old colleagues in different employment, developing new skills, and working hard in a profit-making business.


Developing an Online Portfolio

Almost everything is done online in the 21st century. It’s important for busy professionals to have an up-to-date resume ready for potential employers, but being so busy means it’s difficult to do this. Your LinkedIn profile is, in itself, a resume, or an online portfolio, which you can develop as you progress in your career. The entire thing is always there, ready for you to use, and being able to update it is straightforward and easy for businesspeople who don’t have the time for the paperwork.


Establish My Expertise Through Blogs and Articles

As a writer, it’s necessary for me to write blogs and articles to establish myself as a professional in my field. But it’s still important for people in different industries to write blogs and articles, as this will establish their expertise much more solidly. An article written and posted on LinkedIn will be visible to your entire network, which can then be liked and shared and subsequently viewed by professionals outside of your network. In doing this you’re planting your feet on solid ground to convey yourself as an expert in your field, which shows your skills and helps bring you more success in the future.

Businesses ultimately want to make a profit, and to do this, they need their employees to be the best they can be. Most companies look for people who have plenty to say and do, and to be up there with a strong online portfolio, connections and recognised skills and talents. If you utilise social media as a tool, you’ll eventually grow as a person, gain your success and develop further in your career.
