As a top LinkedIn connected person & talent linkedin trainer these are the five most common things I’ve identified that most people don’t do on LI.
Linkedin Tips #1: They don’t connect with enough people to make a difference to their business growth.
No one really takes you serious on LinkedIn until you have over 500 1st level linkedin profile connections. Quality trumps quantity.
Linkedin experts and Linkedin reports correctly indicate that when people join LinkedIn they are given 3,000 linkedin profile invitations to 1st level connect with other LinkedIn business people.
Many LinkedIn members have less than 500 1st level linkedin profile connections, which means they have not used up their initial 3,000 LinkedIn invitations. If you are looking for business growth or increased sales of your products or services, then think of yourself as Theatre Director with 3,000 complimentary tickets to promote your first theatrical play.
No one in their right mind would just send out 500 or less tickets when you have the opportunity of enticing 3,000 people to view your expertise & promote you via word of mouth.
So the scoop from linkedin news is: don’t hold on to the balance of your unused LinkedIn invitations.
Linkedin Tips #2: They don’t have enough LinkedIn recommendations on their LinkedIn profile.
Many linkedin blogs and linkedin articles speak openly about how genuine recommendations add credibility & kudos to your linkedin profile. They also inspire confidence in prospective buyers & business decision makers.
Although there is no LinkedIn pre-determined hard & fast rule about the number of recommendations you should have, LinkedIn suggests you have at least three just to help you complete your linkedin profile to 100% complete status.
However most power networkers and linkedin experts agree that a good ratio of 0.5% to 1% LinkedIn recommendations linked to the number of your 1st level connections is a good benchmark.
If you’ve less than 1% recommendations then some business buyers & decision makers consider this as red flag warning. In effect you are telling the world that less than 1% of your customers, clients &/or associates deem you worthy of a recommendation.
Linkedin Tips #3: They don’t dedicate enough time to promoting themselves or their businesses via LinkedIn.
I am a prolific reader of numerous linkedin blogs, linkedin articles, linkedin news and linkedin reports all based on the premise of providing linkedin tips to help people to use linkedin. And yet I despair of self proclaimed LinkedIn Guru’s stating you only need to allocate 10 minutes per day, five days a week to really leverage LinkedIn for business growth in their linkedin blog .
This seriously flawed train of thought is by definition pre-programmed for failure and it is not the correct way to use linkedin if you are looking for long term business growth & increased sales of your products & services from Linkedin.
View your LinkedIn presence as one of your talent linkedin business marketing strategies. Allocate enough time, effort & energy & most linkedin experts agree it can be one of your most cost effective & productive linkedin profile growth strategies.
Linkedin Tips #4: They don’t write a Killer Linkedin Profile.

c] It doesn’t matter how fantastic your LinkedIn profile is, if the search engines can’t find you, then you are missing out on the greatest free Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) marketing strategy provided by LinkedIn.
Ensure your LinkedIn scripts include key words & key phrases used by people who are searching online via the LinkedIn search or advanced search option for someone in your business sector.
Linkedin Tips #5: They don’t really get the point of online business networking.
The main point is – More Business Contacts = More Business Opportunities – To Generate Leads, Referrals & to Close Business Deals.
